STYX CENTRE – Movement as Medicine

28th September 2017 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Dragon and Tiger is an ‘internal’ whole body exercise system which contains movements to open up the joints, which are smooth and continuous, promote release of tension, calm the nervous system – brain and heart, lengthen contracted and held tissue, bringing strength, fluidity and ease to our whole body. Because of its gentle nature D&T is perfect for those rehabilitating from surgery, injury and for those looking to improve their mobility, posture and co-ordination.

D & T is commonly known as a Qigong (Pronounced Chee Kung, and can be written as Chi Kung) exercise. Qigong is translated as energy work or internal work. We use the word internal to underline that we are working deeply inside of the body right down to the internal organs and cells, as opposed to only working with the muscles.

Dragon and Tiger Qigong is a seven movement exercise system tracing back over 1,000 years to the famous Shaolin Monastery in China, where it was used to prepare mind and body for meditation. The movements of Dragon and Tiger seem externally very much like Tai Chi, being slow and graceful in nature.

Qigong is often known as being the pre-requisite or the foundation exercises for Taichi practice. Often many people who are new to Qigong do not know its relationship to Taichi. It is often said that if your Qigong is good then your Taichi is also good. In our modern culture we often overlook the significance of Qigong practice and can spend years learning Taichi forms without understanding their true purpose. If you are new to Taichi practice, D&T is probably one of the best ways to begin your internal practice.

The seven movements are taught sequentially, and build to make an excellent all-round exercise program which can be completed in as little as 15-20 minutes per day. The practice requires no special clothing or equipment and very little space. Regular practitioners regularly report benefits including: improved posture; pain relief (notably from back pain or sciatica); enhanced bodily awareness, balance, flexibility and coordination; “all day energy;” increased ability to flow through stressful events and emotional turmoil; relaxation and a sense of being at ease within their body, peace of mind and better sleep.

The movements of D&T also work deeply with the structural alignments of the body as the gentle movements progressively help to co-ordinate and stabilize both sides of the body, allowing the practitioner to gradually release and ‘let-go’ of deep held tensions lying under the conscious radar which can excessively and prematurely activate the nervous system bringing forth physical and mental imbalance.
