Styx Communities – Mindfulness Basics – 4 Week Course

Mindfulness is a simple and very powerful practice of training our attention. It’s simple in that it’s really just about paying attention to what’s happening here and now (i.e. sensations, thoughts, and emotions) in a non-judgemental way. It’s powerful because it can interrupt the habit of getting lost in thoughts, mostly about the future or past, which often generates more stress on top of the real pressures of everyday life.

Over the last 30 years, academic research in the fields of neuroscience, psychology and physical medicine have documented the wide-ranging benefits of learning to meditate, particularly in an 8-week mindfulness course format.

With practice, mindfulness can serve as the perfect antidote to healing stress which can sometimes undermine our health, performance and quality of life. Evidence has shown that it can be an effective aid in the treatment of many mental and physical health issues, as well as generally improving our performance, relationships, and well-being.

This Mindfulness basics course is an introduction to Mindfulness, we will explore topics and meditation practices over the weeks with plenty of time for discussion about practice.

Themes covered are:

Week 1: Stepping out of Automatic ~ Learn skills on how to step out of automatic, explore why living with more awareness can awaken us to a deeper experience of life.  Learn practices that can be woven into your daily life.

Week 2: Basics of Mindful Awareness and Settling Mind & Body ~ Learn skills on how to become more mindful, how to work with a wandering mind, learn practices to help settle the mind and body.

Week 3:  Body Mind Connection ~ Understand how the body helps build emotional intelligence. Open awareness to our habitual reactions and start to explore how we can respond rather than react.

Week 4: Self Care ~ Experience the power of Self Compassion & Kindness. How tuning into ourselves can lead us to take better care of ourselves and those around us. Increase our empathy and acceptance for ourselves and those around us.

Each participant will receive handouts and audio practices to support the journey through the course. It is ideal that you attend for the 4 weeks to get the maximum benefits from the course.

Course commences Wednesday’s 3rd January – 24th January 2018 11-12pm – Cost: £5 Minimum Donation (If you are unable to pay £5 this is also OK, If you can donate more then please do as all proceeds go towards the centre so they can continue to offer community classes)
