Breathing practice and meditation are powerful approaches to calming the mind and reducing stress.

Through regular breathing practice, the mind becomes clearer and emotions become more balanced. Pranayama leads to an ability to remain calm and centred in the midst of chaos.

Correlations between breathing and the state of our body and mind have been made for thousands of years. More recently, countless studies have supported this ancient wisdom, which links poor breathing patterns with some of our most common health issues.

The healing power of the breath.

Breathing practices, which improve optimal breathing, have been found to alleviate migraine headaches, chronic pain conditions, high blood pressure, asthma, panic attacks and hyperventilation syndrome, as well as coronary heart disease.

Efficiency of breathing has also been directly related to the efficiency of movement with regards to postural stability, strength and balance. This can be investigated further through our DNS and movement therapy work.

Explore your breath

Pranayama is an often-overlooked aspect of Yoga. In pranayama we learn how to breathe optimally through a series of different techniques to manage breath regulation. There is also an exploration of the physiology of breathing patterns and movement within the body. Through precise teaching and practice we experience a deeper understanding of the connection between breath, body and mind.

When the breath “wanders” [i.e., is irregular] the mind also is unsteady. But when the breath is calmed, the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life.

Meditation is a state of awareness in which we are able to calm and slow our incessant and habitual patterns of thought. With a little effort and some training, meditation will bring calmness and balance to our body, mind and energy, which in-turn offers a myriad of health and wellbeing benefits.

Train the mind

Meditation practices are essentially methods or tools for training the mind and they can lead to a profound sense of peace. We are fortunate to have such a range of meditative methods and contemplative practices available to us which have evolved over past and present generations, and continue to assist our individual growth and wellbeing.

Reach your potential

The practice can enhance our understanding of ourselves and our potential. It can help us to:

  • Develop a positive relationship with others and the world around us
  • Help us to overcome obstacles such as stress, worry, anxiety, lack of focus and unhappiness
  • Unburden what we don’t need and give us clarity of mind
  • Bring calmness and balance to our body, mind and energy
